Field notes from the quiet · based in the UAE

Stories that live
beneath the beneath the surface.

Adventure films driven by curiosity, going beyond the obvious to find out what's there. Plus a voice for hire, for brands who want the same.

01 · About

Every film starts with a question.

I'm a filmmaker and voice artist working across the UAE and the UK. My films are driven by curiosity. I go somewhere, explore it properly and find out what's beyond the obvious. On foot, by bike, wherever the adventure takes me.

On my YouTube channel Beyond the Expected, I explore places and share them through my own lens and in my own voice. New films land roughly every three weeks, shot, written, voiced and edited by me.

Beyond the film work, I help a small number of businesses shape how they show up online, from the website through to the marketing around it. That work lives at Amy Garside Media.

The work returns to four ideas
01

Scale

What changes when you shift your distance.

02

Traces

What remains when the thing itself has gone.

03

Layers

What's sitting underneath what you can see.

04

Stillness

What appears when you stop for a while.

02 · Films

The slow, the true, the considered.

Travel and place documentaries from the channel. Deserts, coastlines, old quarters and forgotten villages, each one about what's hiding beyond the obvious.

Hidden in the UAE Mountains for 3,000 Years

Ain Al Sheria, Fujairah · 2026

6:09 · Writer, director, voice, edit

Bronze Age carvings on a rock face in the Hajar Mountains, three thousand years old and still legible. The clearest trace in the series of a hand, a tool and a decision about what was worth recording.

03 · For brands

Working with brands.

Place pieces

When a brand is rooted somewhere specific and that place is part of the story. Hotels, cultural institutions, tourism boards, heritage sites. The work I publish on Beyond the Expected is the strongest evidence of this register.

The way I work

One conversation to understand what you actually need, which is often not what the brief says. A short written treatment so we agree the register before anything is shot. Then I deliver. You see the work when it is ready, not when it is half done.

I take on a small number of brand projects each year. That is deliberate. It is the only way the work stays at this register.

04 · Voiceover

A considered voice, in any register.

Voice is one of four things I do, alongside writing, directing and producing. On my own films the voice serves the place. On a commission it serves the brief, from warm documentary narration through to a bright retail read. What stays the same is the craft, not the tempo.

For brands & organisations

I work with brands and organisations whose audiences have stopped responding to noise. Brand films, when I take them on, sit in the same observational register as the documentary series.

In a world of the ‘instagrammable’, this is an engaging, precise and quietly radical guide to seeing differently. A set of practical lenses, it echoes John Berger’s Ways of Seeing for the traveller and photographer willing to look beyond the obvious.

What distinguishes it is its insistence that attention is not a mood but a method. The four lenses offer a structured way of engaging with place that resists the extractive, checklist driven habits of modern travel. Instead of chasing views, the reader is invited to ask better questions.

The result is a subtle but meaningful shift. Places stop presenting themselves as images to be captured and begin to unfold as processes to be read. The familiar becomes strange again; the overlooked becomes legible.

Highly recommended as an essential field guide equally valuable to students and seasoned photographers.
